Robert Zemeckis is a good director to finish of the directors category of this filmmakers post. Robert Zemeckis is mostly know and remembered for Back to the Future. Back to the Future is by far in my top ten all time favorite movies. It is a great Sci-Fi Comedy. Robert Zemeckis has ventured into the world of CGI creating movies with motion capture technology. His three latest films are “live action” motion capture movies: The Polar Express, Beowulf, and A Christmas Carol. Robert Zemeckis likes to work with leading man Tom Hanks, beside the already mentioned Polar Express, the two of them also worked together on the films Forrest Gump and Cast Away. If I were to sum up Robert Zemeckis in one sentence I would have to say, “He is versatile filmmaker who can make great films in any genre.”

Most of us got hook to the Wachowski Brothers via a little Sci-Fi Film called The Matrix. This is the pinnacle of their work, they will be forever known as the guys who did the Matrix movies. They have done some other films the produced and wrote V for Vendetta. Many of us still remember the box office flop Speed Racer, in my opinion on of the most colorfully and beautiful films. The Wachowski Brothers don’t really have much on their plate right now the only film they have is Ninja Assassin, which they are producing.

If I were looking for an indie picture to rent and watch, I would most likely watch a Gus Van Sant movie. The first movie I saw of his was an HBO movie called, Elephant. I have graduated from that to his most well known film, Good Will Hunting. Not to long ago I got a chance to watch his film titled, Paranoid Park. He recently has made a film about real life Politian Harvey Milk, called well, Milk. I have not seen this movie but I am sure it is just as good as the others I have seen, since it has won 2 Oscars. Gus Van Sant has made a great impact on the indie circuit and I hope he continues to do so.

Spielberg is synonymous with filmmaking. If I were asked a random group of people on the street to name one movie director, I bet Steven Spielberg’s name would come up ninety percent of the time. Spielberg should be in the top ten best directors/ filmmakers of all time on anyone’s list. Spielberg went from being a kid wondering the backlot of Universal Studios to “King of Filmmaking.” As of late Spielberg spends most of his time as executive producer on films like Transformers, Eagle Eye, and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. That is only the tip of the iceberg, Spielberg’s filmography extends past that with him been apart of more than 150 productions.

Because M. Night has been an epic fail as of late I will move on to a more notable filmmaker, which would be Bryan Singer. Bryan Singer is known for being the man behind adapting the comic book series X-men to fit the big screen. He did a superb job on both X-men and X2: X-Men United. In my strong opinion if he didn’t leave the X-Men franchise to make Superman Returns then X-Men: The Last Stand would have turned out way better of a film. I understand you have to follow the money, especially in the movie business. Bryan is still in his prime and I think he has the talent to produce many more great films.

As of late M. Night has been a “failure” when comes to making good movies. I give the guy props though because he can write awesome stories. He can direct if their an effort that is put into just look at his early work like The Sixth Sense or even Signs. M. Night grows on you, for sure. I like how he uses the Hitchcock way of suspense as a scar tactic. I think I was more sacred of a dog barking and sprinkler system going of then I was a alien waling but or a “wolf grass monster.” Last I like how he interjects subtle religious undertones. ..very profound will at the same superficial, amazing right .

Jason is one of the only directors that became an instant favorite. As soon as a saw Juno I looked up Jason to see what else of his I liked; quite frankly I never have heard of any of this film in his filmography except for Thank You for Smoking. Juno was great so I gave him props and he became one of my favorites. I hope he produce more great movies like Juno and stays in my favorites. Until he seen as a great from the world stand point I will cherish the moments he brings to us film fans. With how much he has already done; he made my top five indie filmmakers, falling somewhere behind Gus Van Sant and Wes Anderson.

I was going to do Frank Miller but I realized even though he co-directed Sin City and directed The Spirit, he is more of a graphic novelist…and great one at that. So I decided to skip him and move on to a greater filmmaker, Christopher Nolan. It really hard to find a bad film that has Christopher Nolan name on it, granted he only has seven films on his Filmography. As most of you know I am a Sci-Fi/ Fantasy fan leaning more toward Fantasy. So when I say I also like Comic Book movies, you may be think, that not a stretches. Out of the pantheon of Comic Book movies I prefer Marvel over D.C. I say this to bring the point that Christopher Nolan brought out a different kind of love for D.C. via Batman. Even thought Batman Begins wasn’t my first Christopher Nolan film, which would be Memento; It was Batman Begins that made me a fan of Christopher Nolan’s work. I also like a good mind boggling Drama, anything that make you think or question your very being (religion, philosophy, or belief system). With Christopher Nolan knack of no-linear-storytelling he can put up a good fight for a great good mind boggling drama, case and point, Memento or even The Prestige. As Christopher Nolan’s career progresses his work gets better, look at his latest film if you don’t believe me, The Dark Knight, the sequel to Batman Begins. It is filmmaking skills like Christopher Nolan that places some like him in my top ten all time favorite filmmakers.

George Lucas is the man behind one of the greatest Sci-Fi/ Fantasy ever. American Graffiti might have put him on the filmmaker map but it was Star Wars that made him a house hold name. George Lucas is a writing genius and maybe even a producing genius but not quite a directing genius. I am not say he can’t direct it’s just he dose a better job writing and producing. Lucas needs something NEW. His filmography consist of six and half (the Clone Wars was only character/ universe) Star Wars movies, four Indiana Jones movies, and some odd jobs project to fill the gaps. He either just needs to quit while he still kind of ahead or reinvent himself as a filmmaker. Even with this down word spiral of movies, George Lucas will always be in my top ten all because of Star Wars.

Stanley Kubrick only fits into my quest to find one director/ filmmaker per letter of the alphabet. I not saying I hate Stanley Kubrick’s work it just I haven’t even seen the half of it. I mean out of his whole filmography I have only seen The Shining and 2001: A Space Odyssey. I been meaning to see A Clockwork Orange but it just hasn’t happened. I just going to say he made a great run while he was still alive. He may be known as one of the greatest filmmakers to live but he doesn’t fit into my top ten. The people who know me know that I am a Fantasy/ Sci-Fi type of guy. With that being said, 2001: A Space Odyssey is the only film of his I respect, except for A.I.: Artificial Intelligence which was more of a Steven Spielberg film but Stanley Kubrick was given a posthumous producing credit. Like I said before it not that I don’t like Stanley Kubrick is that I haven’t gotten to know his work.

Peter Jackson the kiwi director with a vision of detail. Most of you remember the small trilogy called Lord of the Rings; well Peter Jackson helmed that projected, on the set he was described as a hobbit because of his fashion since. After LOTR he moved on to a classic monster film King Knog, he remade producing another epic film with an emphasis on detail. He now is brewing a couple of film one with be a joint effort with Steven Spielberg called Tintin, while the other is the prequel to LOTR, called The Hobbit, on this film he is only producing but another great genius, the king of fantasy, Guillermo del Toro will be helming the movie. Peter Jackson may always have that enter hobbit in him but I believe he will become a filmmaking god.

Most television fans learned about Ron Howard via Happy Days, but those of us who are movie fan know he has move on to filmmaking. Ron Howard is an underdog director; he should make the top ten or twenty best directors of all time but he just misses the mark. I think it that way because he puts out films like A Beautiful Mind, which is arguably his best work. Then on the other hand, a crappy film comes down the pipeline. He may have some pretty crappy movies but he always fines away to redeem himself, sometimes these redemptions lead to Oscar nominations. Ron Howard will rank in my favorites director even thought to the world see him as a “above average” director.

Terry Gilliam entered my life the same way he probably did for everyone else, through Monty Python. Even though Monty Python is a major part of Terry Gilliam’s career it’s not the only thing he has done. He has done some small fantasy like the box office failure The Brothers Grimm. Even thought Terry Gilliam will always be known as the king of British humor via Monty Python, I hope he can make a name for himself in the fantasy genre. He might have failed big time with The Brothers Grimm but I think the future could bring greatness. To tell you the truth, I am kind of looking forward to see Terry Gilliam’s new movie The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, but that might be because it’s Heath Ledger last movie; either way Terry Gilliam will always make my list of favorite directors even if it just for his work on Monty Python.

To tell you the truth, I am kind of looking forward to see Terry Gilliam’s new movie The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, but that might be because it’s Heath Ledger last movie; either way Terry Gilliam will always make my list of favorite directors even if it just for his work on Monty Python.

DAVID FINCHER

My brother is the one who introduced me to the world of David Fincher via Fight Club; shortly there after I watched Se7en. Sometime between then and now I sunk in watching The Game, Panic Room, and not to long ago Zodiac. All of these film I like if not loved. David Fincher brings a different kind of genius to filmmaking. I don’t know how to explain it but I will try my best: In my opinion, David Fincher has six films out of eight that are good and out of that six, three are beyond good, out of those three, one is on its way to greatness. I am talking about David Fincher‘s latest film, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, it’s already getting Oscar buzz. I don’t know about you but David Fincher has made great cinematic adventures that have satisfied my appetite for film and filmmaking, I hope he continues down this same path producing many great films.

Roland Emmerich is one of those filmmaker people don’t mention. Ever since last week I couldn’t tell you what this guy has directed. With my new project to find one director/filmmaker for each letter of the alphabet I can across Roland Emmerich to represent the letter “E”. As I did research on him I realized have scene my far share of Emmerich films, most of which I enjoyed; films like The Day After Tomorrow and Independence Day. Sometimes you have to look past Steven Spielberg and Tim Burton to find greatness. I am not say Roland Emmerich is the greatest filmmaker to ever live or that he rains supreme to filmmakers like Steven Spielberg and Tim Burton. I saying you can find enjoyable films from lesser know directors, and Roland Emmerich is one of those types of directors.
